Now that Brent and I live in Sneads Ferry, it only seemed right to check out the pride of the town- the annual Shrimp Festival. The Shrimp Festival is a weekend long event with cooking contests, karaoke contests, and a run for the coveted Miss Shrimp, Junior Miss Shrimp, and Little Miss Shrimp titles. And before you ask- no I did not enter. I figured I would give the local girls a chance, didn't want to show them up or anything. Yeah right. At the festival there is also a parade, fireworks, a beer tent, and plenty of fair food.Well on Saturday we slept through the parade and had every intention of going to the festival to check it out. Well afternoon came and went, and so did dinner- so we decided we'd try and make the fireworks. Let's just say we ended up watching from our driveway because we still hadn't quite made it there. Finally we get there about 10 pm- just in time for one last hour of drinking in the beer tent before they stopped serving. To say that we made good use of our one hour would be putting it lightly. Brent and our friends drank who knows how many beers and I polished off a whole bottle of wine. Why a bottle? Well it was either $5 for each little plastic cup full or $13 for a whole bottle- I know a bargain when I see one!
Up until the walk home, the highlight of the night had been some old drunk guy dancing all by himself with his shirt off. But then on the way home Brent decided to provide the entertainment. He challenged our friends to a little contest to see who could walk on their hands the farthest. Really he was challenging our friend Malia because she was a gymnast in college. So this is what we looked like walking home...
So Brent would make it a few steps, then fall, take a few more steps, then fall... and so on and so on. Then Brent decided that his shirt must be in the way or something and takes it off. For some reason he thought walking on his hands with no shirt on would help him...
But wait- it gets better. Brent then decides that it must be his shorts that are the problem. So he takes off his shorts and throws them to me- he is now walking down the street on his hands wearing nothing but his underwear and sneakers. That might have been one of the funniest things I have ever seen, not to mention I was pretty drunk at the time. Luckily I have pictures of it all. Sorry to disappoint- but Brent wouldn't let me put the pictures of him in his underwear up. Malia then decides she's seen enough, she would show Brent how it's done. She walked on her hands with perfect form and for what seemed like forever. Had this really been a contest with actual judges- Malia would have won hands down. No pun intended.
On Sunday, once we got over our hangovers, Brent and I made a trip back to the Shrimp Festival. We figured we should check it out in the daylight, and sober. I have to say I wasn't that impressed- there wasn't even really any shrimp. Just fair food like funnel cakes and snow cones, and a bunch of vendors selling junk you don't really need. We actually saw a stand selling marshmallow shooters. If those are what I think they are- why do you need something that shoots marshmallows anyway? Here's Brent on the way home enjoying his funnel cake way too much and completely covering himself in powdered sugar.
Lesson learned- next year the only reason to visit the shrimp festival will be for the beer tent. Maybe some fireworks if they're lucky.
